Understanding the NGX All-Share Index psychological levels is often separates a panic-driven selloff from a well-thought-out, profitable trade. Back in my early days of trading in Nigeria, it would happen quite often for me to be overwhelmed by the constant news flow and to act on each red or green candle without knowing the story behind them. Years of chart-watching made me understand that the market, just like people who trade in it, has its own history. The market is anchored to some prices called psychological levels.
Be you an ordinary investor in Lagos or an experienced trader observing the market activity from Abuja, the importance of these “invisible” lines on your chart cannot be overstated. They mark price points where fear, greed, and hope meet.
To put things into simple terms, psychological levels refer to price points considered important by the traders. The psychological level of the NGX All Share Index would always be a rounded number. Why? The reason lies in the fact that our brains work in ways that make things easier for us. Remembering the milestone point of 100,000 index points becomes easier than 99,843.42.
As the index approaches such nice and rounded figures, the sentiment in the market changes. Traders buying the index expect a rally, whereas the sellers get afraid of a turnaround. In other words, the psychological levels become self-fulfilling prophesies as the participants observe such barriers, and the index acts just as expected.
One thing that I cannot stress enough is that if you wish to make money in this business, then you have to let go of rumors and baseless information. Technical analysis will allow you to filter out the noise in the market place. While fundamental analysis will tell you which stock to invest in, technical analysis will tell you the time to invest.
With the help of past data and current pricing trends, we can identify certain patterns. These psychological levels of NGX All-Share Index are just one such tool that we use. Once we combine these levels with other tools such as the Relative Strength Index or moving averages, we get a system whereby we trade not on basis of emotions but probabilities.
However, in order to identify these levels on your own, there is no need to use any expensive software; all you need is your keen eyesight.Identify Round Figures:
For those interested in more systematic techniques in their portfolios, I strongly advise to review NairaCompare’s technical analysis tips.

It must be remembered that the Nigerian market relies heavily on liquidity and institutional activity. The pressure becomes intense when large institutional players take the index towards a key psychological level. I have followed the trend of market movement especially during the last trading hour before reaching an important psychological level.
The penetration of resistance level under heavy volume denotes a huge change in the trend and is commonly referred to as “breakout.” It is usually the case that after such an event, a new stage of the market’s development begins. On the other hand, when the index touches an important psychological level and retraces, the next stage may be considered as the stage of market distribution.
You might wonder: “How do I apply all of this without being swamped?” This is my personal process:
However, the achievement of financial freedom does not depend on choosing the right securities alone but also on controlling one’s psyche and learning the language of the markets. The psychological levels of the NGX All-Share Index are only one of the many pieces of a complex and multi-layered puzzle called our local market.
Ignore short-term fluctuations and market noise because they distract you from your long-term objectives. Study this subject and cross-check all your information to ensure that you have a solid data foundation. Always remain detached emotionally. Once you develop a consistent and data-based approach, you will discover that the Nigerian market is much more accessible than before.
